    Rossio Station

Estação Central do Rossio, Lisbon’s iconic central railway station was built in 1887 by architect José Luís Monteiro. Since that time, the station’s interior had suffered serious neglect and Broadway Malyan was commissioned to refurbish the building and bring it back to its former glory. By stripping out various additions and alterations, the building has been redesigned to provide better passenger facilities and new tickets halls on two levels integrated with 3,000m² of office space, 1,000m² of retail and food offering, 1,000m² of public gallery and exhibition space as well as a landscaped car-free public square on the site of the former car park. Original stonework and cast iron windows have been restored throughout, and together with new external lighting, the building once again stands as a truly proud part of the city centre.

    Singlewell CTRL

The Singlewell project comprises office, workshop and maintenance buildings together with a rail spur off the main line, access road, car parking and hardstandings. The purpose of the depot is to support the onerous maintenance regime of Britain’s first high speed railway and provides a maintenance facility with an administrative and records base, workshops and stores to maintain track vehicles, which is independent of existing railway facilities. The maintenance of the railway is undertaken from vehicles running along the tracks, which they access from Singlewell. The rail vehicles have a range of modules that can be attached to undertake the activities required and their day to day maintenance is managed on site. The depot is to the north of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) and combined with the widening of the A2, results in the loss of the Singlewell linear park. To mitigate this a new park was provided to the south of the CTRL, opposite the depot, using excavated material from the construction works. Other works within the depot include sidings; fuelling facility; training area; laydown area and car parking.

    Princess Royal Distribution Centre

Backed by a £150 million investment from Royal Mail, the ‘Railnet’ partnership heralded a new partnership with British Rail’s light freight business, Rail Express, with the aim to get one hundred million more letters a year delivered on the day after posting. Central to these plans were the provision of a new hub and a fleet of 16 new Royal Mail trains. Broadway Malyan was commissioned to design this new road/rail mail distribution hub at Stonebridge Park in London. The apparent simplicity of the building belies the complexity of Royal Mail’s operational requirements and reflects the close co-operation between the client and Broadway Malyan in formulating the brief and managing cost control for this complex project.

    Imperial Wharf Station

Imperial Wharf Station is a proposed new station on the west London line, providing an attractive, safe and secure environment for passengers, with full DDA compliance and safeguarding for a possible future Chelsea/Hackney underground line. The design of the platform canopy is intended to provide an economic and attractive lightweight structure, incorporating lift shafts and staircases, which in turn provides protection from the weather on this exposed elevated site close to the River Thames.
