Intermodal Transport: Trade Made Easier

Intermodal best practice values often start with ‘C’: CO2 reductions; Capacity building; Collaborative partnerships; Corridor cooperation; Containerisation; Co-modality (synchronizing and bundling of cargo). Due to the EU crisis, the emphasis moved towards making smarter use of existing infrastructure and rolling stock resulting in all kinds of green savings. ‘The’ 3 best practices don’t exist; it depends on the available quality of infrastructure, service offered by market players being enabled to execute their task properly and authorities with an mode-overlapping logistics vision. A list of freight best practices will be referred to in EIA’s presentation, enabling delegated to select and analyze cases to be further developed in-house.” stated Peter Wolters, Secretary General of European Intermodal Association during a pre event interview on the 3 best practices in intermodal transport followed in Europe. Wolters has joined the prestigeous speaker panel at the GCC Intermodal Transport Summit.

With support from the European Intermodal Association, The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport and Universal Freight Organization the summit will address the challenges & opportunities that lie ahead with regards to intermodal transport within the Middle East and the GCC. The summit will be held in Jeddah on 26 - 27 November 2013. The conference will focus on all four modes of transport (rail, truck, air and sea) and will span topics from cross border regulation to freight transport safety.

Eng. Ashraf M. Kotait from the Saudi Ports Authority (SEAPA) will address the attendees on Smart Inland Ports for Integrated Sea Ports Logistics. He will elaborate on Main Advantages of Co-location for an Inland Port. Ian Smith from Saudi Rail Commission will cover the rail aspect of the intermodal framework. His topic will focus on Developing Intermodal Transport facilities in Saudi Arabia. Solution providors at the summit will have the opportunity to display their products to the decision makers from the transport and goverment bodies and gather market information. It will help them raise profile of the company in the region.

With investments above $115 billion in the transportation (including Ports & Rail) sector across the GCC region, rail alone is expected to contribute over $70 billion in the next 5 years, it clearly states that an exponential growth is expected for the Intermodal Transportation sector. GCC Intermodal Transport Conference will address the challenges & opportunities in introducing & incorporating intermodal transport in different industries without difficulties within Middle East. After US & Europe its time for the GCC to build on its intermodal transport which in return will provide better business to the region resulting in an overall economic development.
