Thirteen international companies have expressed interest in participating in the $15.6bn Oman National Rail Project. This is an ambitious project which will see Oman’s transport network linked up to the rest of the GCC countries.

The Gulf Cooperation Council is supporting the project with funds expected to be released in tranches over 3 years. The first phase of the project will link Sohar to Muscat, Muscat to Duqm Port and Sinaw to Ibra. Future stages will see Sohar linked to the UAE border via Al Ain and Khatmat Malaha.

The companies which have collected tender documents are:

Mott MacDonald
Sener
Bonfica SpA
DB International
Parsons
Yas Consulting Engineers
Sar Al Handash
Consolidated Consultant
Al Manarah Engineering
Ehaf Consulting

The tender requires the preliminary design of the complete infrastructure and systems covering all segments of the rail project, including interoperability with the wider GCC network.

The programme includes the requirement for 6 km of rail tunnels, 130 flyovers, 17 km of viaduct, 20 km of rail bridges, 15 km of wadi bridges and the removal of some 210 million cubic metres of soil.
