25km Causeway Could Link Masirah With Rest of Oman

Plans to build one of the biggest causeways in the Middle East, linking Masirah Island to the rest of Oman will include looking at adding a railway line for future linking with the wider rail network, confirmed project officials.

The project is expected to promote development and modernisation of Masirah over the next 20 to 30 years, with commercial, tourism and industry all being given a boost. Masirah has a 65,000 hectare beach and rich wildlife. The climate is perfect for water sports.

More than a dozen firms have expressed an interest in providing consultancy to the project, which requires a 25 km causeway across the open sea. Consultants are required to propose at least three different alignment options linking to and from different locations. Bidders are also required to complete an environmental study and master plan for land use on Masirah.

The structure will be required to withstand natural phenomena such as ocean currents, wind, earthquakes, storms and lightning strikes and take into account bridge height and the navigational safety of vessels operating offshore.

The causeway will bring tourism, commerce and industry to the area, boosting jobs. Bids for provision of consultancy services close on April 1, 2013.
