Dubai Looks To The Future With New Metro Lines

Chairman of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Mattar Al Tayer confirmed that three new lines have been approved by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The new metro lines - purple, gold and blue, will be in operation by 2030 and the existing red and green lines will be extended. The green line will be lengthened to 20.6 km and serve 11 stations between Jaddaf and Dubai Academic City. The red line is anticipated to link the site of Expo 2020, which the UAE is bidding to host, to Al Maktoum Airport at Jebel Ali.

The metro will link up with Etihad Rail to give access via three transport hubs to 1200 km of rail network, connecting with Saudi in the west and Oman in the East. The hubs will be at Al Maktoum Airport, at Dubai Land Station and at Central Station. The blue line will connect with projects beyond Dubai Bypass Road to the east.

Planning is proceeding according to projections of population growth in the urban Dubai area, which it is anticipated could exceed 4 million people by 2025. It is hoped that 30% of Emirates residents will use public transport by that time.
