Sohar Eagerly Awaits New Oman Railway

No matter how big a port is, it cannot function without inland connections. It is all very well being able to handle a great capacity but unless it can move goods inland then it can be as big as you like but will still not be able to function properly.

The Omani Port of Sohar is a case in point - it is about as large as it can be with only roads and pipelines supplying it, but with the new Oman Railway Network that will link in with the GCC Railway Network, the future is very bright indeed.

With the planned railway network due to be opened in 2018, Sohar has enacted major expansion plans in order to be the port of choice in the GCC. On the Indian Ocean side of the Strait of Hormuz, it will be able to receive goods and get them almost anywhere in the GCC at great speed for relatively low costs to those prior prior to the railway’s opening. Local logistics businesses are rubbing their hands in anticipation too - this sector is set to have a turnover of over $12bn by 2017 as a result of the port’s expansion.
