Doha Metro Red Line Contract Awarded to Impregilo Consortium
Design contracts for the Red Line North of Doha Metro have been awarded to a consortium led by Italian construction giant Impregilo. The contract is worth $2 billion, including preparatory works electromechanical systems and architectural works.
Impregilo will be the major partner in the contract at 41.25%, with SK Engineering and Construction and Galfar Engineering and Contracting. The contract, awarded by Qatar Railways Company (Q Rail), is part of the $35 billion Qatar Integrated Rail Program, one of the most comprehensive rail networks in the Gulf, which will include a passenger and freight railway linking Ras Laffan in the North with Mesaieed in the South and incorporate a high-speed link between the new international airport and Doha city centre, a causeway link to Bahrain, and ultimately a link up with the planned GCC rail network.
The Doha Metro is planned to be complete in time for the FIFA World Cup 2022. Qatar’s economy is expected to sustain a 5.2% annual growth rate to 2017, according to the Qatar Financial Centre. Abdulrahman Al Shaibi, Managing Director, told the 2nd Bloomberg Doha Conference in April 2013 that the $200 billion planned investment in infrastructure will benefit the whole region, not just Qatar itself, by providing funding and investment opportunities in the private sector.
